Chinese and Japanese Art embrace a large range of artictic materials and technics. During all dynastic periods, the objects testify ambitions, spititual aspirations, and taste of imperial, religious and political Institutions, and testify philisophy and faith of Scholars.
In China, works of Art rise out fine carved bamboo, ivory, boxwood, rhinoceros horn, coconut, and from precious wood such as zitan and huang huali.
Emboidery and ostentation items are alsoo very precious : imperial embroidered silk clothes, and “kesi” dress, “kesi” tapestry and banner are very sophisticated ; blue kingfisher feathers were tied onto Chinese jewellery.

In Japan, ivory okimono and netsuke were worked in purpose to be the most realistic and reach the technical perfection, prowess that the artist signs on his work. Ivory embellished by semi-precious stones is named “shibayama” from the deviser family name. Meiji era (1868-1912) is the time of the gorgeous production in all medium : bronze, lacquer, ivory, boxwood etc…
All Chinese and Japanese works of Art combine usefulness and the sublim.
