The circular box with three small feet, entirely decorated with a myriad of small flying butterflies in red, green, brown and gold enamels. The lid painted with three large butterflies, the inside of the lid an of the box and the inside also with apattern of three flying butterflies. The underside with a mark in overglaze red and gold . The Satsuma ware, characterized by its dense decorations made with red, brown and gold enamels on ivory background, was born in the early nineteenth century. In the second half of the nineteenth century, it was mainly exported to Europe and the United States where it was highly valued.
